Focus Collective
FOR AGES 12-15
Focus Collective is for young photographers aged 12+ ready to move beyond the basics and begin developing their own creative voice.
Across workshops, short courses, and “Day in the Life” experiences, students are encouraged to think more deeply about how they see, capture, and tell stories through their work, building both technical skill and creative confidence.

For young creatives ready to take photography seriously
Focus Collective is designed for older students who want to develop their photography skills in a more intentional, structured way.
Whether they’re considering photography at GCSE, already studying it, or simply have a growing interest in the creative industry, this is where their skills, confidence and understanding begin to deepen.
Who Is It For?
Focus Collective is ideal for students who:
Have a genuine interest in photography or visual storytelling
Are considering or currently studying GCSE Photography or Art
Want to improve both their technical skills and creative thinking
Are curious about creative careers and the photography industry
Sessions are designed to feel more grown-up, giving students the space to explore their ideas while building real, transferable skills.
What We Explore
Focus Collective sessions go beyond the basics, helping students understand photography as both a creative discipline and a potential career path.
We cover:
Manual camera control in more depth (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
Composition, lighting and storytelling at a more advanced level
Exploring the work of influential photographers and artists
Developing ideas for personal projects and portfolios
How photography connects to real-world creative industries
The aim is to support both creative expression and academic development, particularly for those working towards GCSE-level study.
Real World Experience
Alongside workshops, there will be opportunities for specialist sessions and “day in the life” experiences, where students can gain insight into what working in photography actually looks like.
These may include:
Shadowing real shoots
Understanding how client work is planned and delivered
Exploring different areas of photography, from events to commercial work
It’s a chance to see photography not just as a hobby, but as a possible career path.
Workshops & Upcoming Sessions
Focus Collective is currently offered through one-off workshops and seasonal sessions, with more opportunities planned for the future.
We’ll be announcing summer workshops soon, alongside additional dates throughout the year.
A regular term-time programme is in development, so if this is something your child would be interested in, it’s well worth registering your interest.

❊ FAQs
You’ve got questions,
we’ve got answers

It’s brilliant that more schools are now offering photography, but there can still be some limitations within a school setting.
Students often have restricted access to equipment, limited hands-on time, and may not be able to take cameras home to continue developing their skills outside of lessons.
Focus Collective is designed to support and strengthen GCSE-level learning in a practical, accessible way.
We help students build confidence in:
Manual camera settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO)
Composition and visual storytelling
Understanding and referencing influential photographers and artists
Developing ideas for projects and portfolios
Alongside this, students are given the time, space and creative freedom to explore personal projects that complement their coursework.
It’s not about replacing what they learn in school, it’s about giving them the opportunity to go further, practise more, and grow in confidence.

We’re able to accept a limited number of work experience students each year. If your child is interested, please get in touch to find out more about availability.
We also offer “day in the life” photography experiences, which are private, in-depth sessions designed to give students a real insight into working in the industry.
These can be tailored to different areas of photography, including:
Commercial photography
Portrait and personal branding
Family photography
They’re a great option for students considering photography as a future career.
-
Not necessarily.
We can provide cameras for sessions, but at this level, many students prefer to use their own so they can become more familiar with it.
If you’re unsure whether your child’s camera is suitable, feel free to get in touch and I’ll happily advise.

Students don’t need formal experience or prior study to join Focus Collective.
However, this group is best suited to those with a genuine interest in photography and a curiosity to learn more.
They might not have studied it before, but they should feel ready to deepen their understanding and develop their skills more quickly.
Technique can always be taught, but interest is something that comes from them, and that’s what this group is built around.
-
Students will explore a range of styles to help them discover what they enjoy most.
This can include:
Portrait photography
Lifestyle and documentary-style photography
Creative and conceptual work
Commercial and brand-style imagery
The aim is to give them a broad foundation while allowing space to develop their own interests.
-
A regular term-time programme is currently in development.
In the meantime, Focus Collective is offered through one-off workshops, short courses and Shadowing opportunities, with more opportunities planned throughout the year.

The best way to stay updated is to join the mailing list, where you’ll be the first to hear about new workshops, summer sessions and future course launches.
